The body was discovered on board a Boeing 787-10 on flight UA202, which landed in Hawaii at its scheduled time, according to flight tracking website Flightware.
“Upon arrival at Kahului Airport on Maui on Tuesday, a body was found in the wheel well of one of the main landing gear of a United aircraft,” United Airlines said in a statement to CNN on Wednesday.
The airline also added that the wheel can only be accessed from outside the aircraft and “at this time, it is not clear how and when the person accessed the wheel well.”
The Maui Police Department is also investigating the discovery of a body from the wheel well of a United Airlines flight. The statement added that the airline is cooperating with law enforcement agencies.
It is still unclear how the body got into the plane's wheel or how the person died, which is being actively investigated.
The FAA has said in the past that about 77% of people who attempt an illegal flight ultimately die.
